Blogs
September 18th, 2007
I guess my blog will be about blogs. I have heard a lot about them and messed with them a little. I am interested to see what all the hype is about. I can see some of the potential benefits of blogs in the education world. I think it is a neat way for students to express themselves and participate, especially those that might not do so in a traditional classroom. However, some adult blogs can seem a little overbearing – like they are venting or, for lack of a better word, blabbing.

I agree, blogs can be a wonderful way for students to express their thoughts & opinions. Many students have a difficult time sharing in the classroom. Blogging can promote otherwise quiet students, to speak out & share their ideas.
Bogging is definitely a new concept for me but it may seem second nature to students. I can see potential for student to communicate and work cooperatively with others by using a Blog. However it is going against the grain for me to express ideas with someone that I do not know or can not see face to face. Needless to say I have never been in a chat room.
Students may opt to use Blogs but should not lose skills in communicating with individuals and groups in person.
Blogging is new to me, as well. I do see how it can be beneficial in education. Many students are already blog-savvy, and would love the opportunity to communicate with others without the face-to-face “committment.” For some, this type of communication takes the risk out of sharing ideas.
Blogs not only give students an opprotunity to share ideas but also allows for unintended learning. They go right along with a major part of my educational philosophy. Do whatever works!
As far as adults are concerned, as long as I don’t have to read what they post, let them vent. It’s cheaper than therapy.
Blogging is new for me. It does provide a forum for discussion which is ideal if you do not have time to meet with your team and you need to collaborate. I do not recommend utilizing a blog for all collaboration but as a convenient resource.
I had not thought of using a blog as a meeting place or collaboration spot for groups working on projects. I think that is a good idea and you can see the progression of the conversation or discussion. With the onset of less conventional educational practices, blogs may be part of the new virtual classroom.
